Many of the protesters’ ideas about solidarity, equality, rights, and justice, and also their explanations of the causes of oppression, resembled those of the 1960s and 1970s. There have also been some attempts to combine the socialist feminism of the earlier generation with the new themes. Thus in 2019 three women launched Feminism for the 99 per cent: A Manifesto, which sought to overcome stale oppositions between ‘identity’ and ‘class politics’. It aspired to unite ‘existing and future movements into a broad-based global insurgency’. Yet the similarities and links between the earlier New Left and ‘third wave’ feminism should not be exaggerated. There were significant differences in ideology, theory, and general assumptions because of the changes in the general context between the two eras. Nevertheless, together both generations have brought about fundamental changes. Progress has not been linear or sufficient, but it would now be difficult to envisage viable socialist theories or organizational forms and practices so dominated by men and masculinity as in the first half of the 20th century.
